The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's lacrosse powers past No. 5 Manhattanville, 17-12, in the Skyline Conference First Round at home on Saturday afternoon.
Top performers:
- Sophomore Taylor Metzler led the Golden Eagles with seven goals, one assist, and one caused turnover.
- Junior Kaitlyn Ippolito recorded four goals, three ground balls, one caused turnover, and six draw controls.
- Senior Gianna DArienzo and junior Sabrina Doyle both scored two goals each.
- Junior Emily Grace Passaro tallied one goal, six assists, five ground balls, four caused turnovers, and four draw controls.
- Senior Kayla Sodano totaled one goal for the Golden Eagles.
- Senior Julia Stolba collected two assists, three ground balls, one caused turnover, and eight draw controls.
How it happened:
- Manhattanville opened the game with the first draw control and goal scored, but St. Joseph's shortly answered with two goals from Ippolito and Doyle to take the lead 2-1.
- Both teams scored back-to-back goals, but a goal from Passaro extended the Golden Eagles's lead 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
- SJLI started the second quarter on a four goal scoring streak which the Valiants halted midway through.
- Both teams exchanged goals once more until Metzler scored two goals and Sodano netted one for St. Joseph's to lead 12-5 at the end of the half.
- Manhattanville outscored the Golden Eagles 4-3 in the third quarter, but despite the Valiants finding the back of the net with 32 seconds left, SJLI continues their lead 15-9.
- The Valiants scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, which Metzler scored on a man-up opportunity from Passaro.
- Manhattanville netted their final goal at 42 seconds, but with three seconds left Metzler scored from Passaro to take St. Joseph's into the semifinals with a score 17-12.
Notes:
- Senior Maggie Harding made eight saves and had four ground balls and one caused turnover.
- The Golden Eagles collected 20 ground balls to the Valiants 13.
- St. Joseph's won 19 draw controls, while Manhattanville won 12.
- SJLI lead with 12 caused turnovers compared to MVILLE 6.
