Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team held off John Jay for a 73-71 non-conference win inside the Danzi Center on Wednesday night.

The win sees the Golden Eagles improve to 4-5 overall on the year as the Bloodhounds drop to 1-7.

The Golden Eagles were paced by freshman Alec Tabada, who matched a career-high of 17 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and dished out three assists.

Sophomore Jake Gaudiello shot 4-for-8 from the field for 14 points and posted game-best totals for assists (4) and steals (4). 

Graduate student Gordon Shouler contributed 10 points, two steals and two assists, and sophomore Ryan McNeely added nine points from the bench.

John Jay's Dan Kenny shot 50% from the field and scored a game-high 23 points. 

SJC stormed to an early lead and went ahead by as many as 24 points in the first half (37-13) before taking a 10-point lead (44-34) into the break.

The Bloodhounds steadily chipped away at the Golden Eagles' lead in the second and pulled ahead, 65-64, with 4:32 to play in regulation. Tabada responded 18 seconds later (66-65), but the victory remained in doubt late on when John Jay knotted the score at 71 with under a minute left.

A wild sequence inside the final 15 seconds made way for Spencer Malloy to put away the winning layup (73-71) with only 1.3 seconds left in the contest.

SJC outshot John Jay from the field, 43.6% to 40.6%, and dominated scoring in the paint, 40-26. Both teams were credited with 41 rebounds apiece.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, December 28, when they visit Baruch College for a non-conference contest at 4:00 pm.
