The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team falls short to Mt. St. Mary's in OT, 85-74.
Top performers:
- Junior Alec Tabada led the Golden Eagles with 22 points, shooting 10-14 from the field, also recording five rebounds and two steals
- Sophomore Justin Turner finished 7-8 from the field, scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds
- Senior Spencer Malloy posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with two assists, one block, and one steal
- Junior Xavier Allen added 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and two steals
- Ryan Graham led MSMC with 19 points, five rebounds and one steal
- The Knight's Justin Rivera scored 17 points, shooting 5-6 from beyond the arc
- Mt. St. Mary's Jayden Figueroa and Connor Cyran tallied 14 and 10 points, respectively
How it happened:
- The opening minutes of the game saw the Golden Eagles and the Knights trading baskets back and forth when Allen was able to break the tied at seven with a layup, followed by a Terrin Roy three to build a five-point lead
- MSMC tied the score just minutes later on a layup from Figueroa, Brenden Graham was able to find Cyran from three-point range to take a three-point lead just halfway through the first half
- As SJLI's Turner found space for a three to tie the game at 22, Mt. St. Mary responded by going on a 14-7 run over the next six minutes of play, taking a seven-point lead
- Back-to-back layups in the final minute of the first half from Roy and Tabada cut the Knights's lead to just three to enter halftime
- St. Joseph's started the second half on a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of play to take back their first lead since the 11-minute mark in the first half
- SJLI held on to their lead for the next two minutes, MSMC responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 51-47 advantage
- As both teams were making shots, taking turns at holding a lead, a Figueroa three-pulled the Knights ahead by three, when Malloy responded with a layup and a free throw tied the game at 66 with five minutes to play
- At the 2:28 mark, Tabada succeeded on a jumper to take a one-point lead before another Figueroa three pulled Mt. St. Mary up two
- Allen was able to hit a clutch jumper to tie the game up with 35 seconds left to send the game into overtime
- Turner opened up the scoring column in overtime, driving to the basket for a layup
- MSMC's Graham responded by hitting three threes in a row to score nine straight points to take a 79-72 lead with two minutes left in the game
- Graham was able to power the Knights past the Golden Eagles in overtime, scoring 13 of the team's final 15 points
Notes:
- St. Joseph's shot 32-67 from the field good for 47.8%
- Mt. St. Mary finished 32-66 from the field (48.5%) and 15-33 from three-point range (45.5%)
- The Knights had 28 bench points to the Golden Eagles' four
- SJLI held a 36-30 rebounding advantage
- The lead changed 18 times, with the score tied nine different times
