Men's Basketball Comes Back Against Old Westbury for First Conference Victory

Results:
The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team opens Skyline Conference play with a 67-62 victory over Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. 

Top performers:
  • Graduate Justin Forest led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, to go along with one rebound, two assists, and one steal
  • Sophomore AJ Esposito finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists
  • Senior Ryan McNeely totaled 14 points, three rebounds and one steal
  • Senior Alec Tabada tallied eight points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks
  • Kellen Leake led the Panthers with 19 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks
How it happened:
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early lead 12 point lead as they outscored SJLI 16-4 through the first nine minutes of action
  • After a timeout call for St. Joseph's, Esposito and McNeely would score the following 17 straight points, out-scoring Old Westbury 17-2 to give SJLI a two-point lead with 6:37 remaining in the first half
  • The final six minutes of the first half saw a back-and-forth battle between the two teams that saw five leads changed before Old Westbury capitalized on two jumpers in the final minute to take a three-point lead into halftime
  • Old Westbury started the second half with both strong defensive and offensive efforts as the Panthers outscored the Golden Eagles 15-6 in the first seven minutes to retake a 12-point lead (48-36)
  • As the Panthers would hold an 11-point lead with 10:29 left in the game, St. Joseph's would cut the lead to just one, with Forest scoring eight of SJLI's 10 points in the run
  • The Golden Eagles would secure their first lead of the second half with 3:13 left in the second half as Tabada would come up with a much-needed block on the defensive end, followed by a layup to take the lead
  • Esposito converted an and-one opportunity, followed by a McNeely three to propel St. Joseph's ahead by seven with just under two minutes to go
  • SJLI would hold on to their lead with their defense and converting their free throws to secure the victory over the Panthers
Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 47.5% from the field (29-61) and 35.7% from beyond the arc (5-14)
  • Old Westbury shot 36.2% from the field and 25.0% from three-point range
  • SJLI held a slight rebounding edge 40-39
  • The Golden Eagles finished with 46 points in the paint and 31 points off the bench
