Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team suffered a 70-67 loss to William Paterson University, as their bid for a comeback fell short in a non-conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Monday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Senior Ryan McNeely led the Golden Eagles with 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field and 3-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc
  • Senior Alec Tabada scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, going 8-for-8 on free-throws which were all in the second half. He led the team with four assists and three blocks
  • Senior Spencer Malloy recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds
  • David Martinez led all players with a 27-point performance for William Paterson, shooting 10-for-21 from the field while adding a game-high three steals
  • Shane Geene added 14 points and five rebounds for the Pioneers, while Jianni Moran scored 10 points

How it happened:

  • After the Golden Eagles scored the first basket of the game, William Paterson went on a massive 18-1 run to take a lead of 15 (18-3) six minutes into the game
  • Following a timeout, St. Joseph's scored seven straight points to cut their deficit to eight (18-10), with five points scored by junior Justin Turner
  • Martinez scored the next 10 points for the Pioneers, with his three-point play at the 8:48 mark giving the visitors a 16-point lead for their largest lead of the half (28-12)
  • A three for McNeely followed by a jumper for junior Matthew Maxwell brought the Golden Eagles within 11 (30-19) with 6:02 on the clock, then junior Anthony Todd made a layup shortly after to make it a 10-point contest (32-22) with 4:37 remaining
  • The Golden Eagles came within six (34-28) on a layup for Tabada with 18 seconds on the clock before WP's Delani Hyde closed out the scoring of the half with a layup as the hosts went into the break trailing 36-28
  • Three-point baskets for Geene and Neftali Valentin gave the Pioneers a lead of 12 (42-30) one minute into the second half
  • A layup for Moran gave the visitors a lead of 16 (55-39) at the 14:27 mark, then the Golden Eagles responded by scoring six consecutive points to trim the deficit to 10 (55-45) with 12:25 remaining
  • SJLI trimmed their deficit to single digits on a layup for McNeely with 9:27 on the clock (58-49), then McNeely scored again about a  minute and a half later to bring the hosts within seven (58-51)
  • Sophomore AJ Esposito made two free throws to cut the deficit to five (58-53) with 7:28 remaining before Moran made a three for the Pioneers to put them back ahead by eight (61-53)
  • The Golden Eagles continued to mount a comeback, as McNeely connected with a three ,and Tabada made a pair of free throws to trim the lead to two points (61-59) with 5:42 on the clock
  • A three-point play for Geene began a 6-0 run for the visitors that increased the lead to 67-59 with under five minutes remaining
  • St. Joseph's proceeded to score the following eight points, with Tabada's pair of free throws tying the game at 67 apiece at the 54-second mark. Tabada scored six of those eight points for the Golden Eagles
  • 10 seconds later, Moran made a three to put the Pioneers ahead 70-67, which is how the score stood through the game's final 44 seconds

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 42.9% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc
  • The Pioneers posted a 41% shooting percentage overall and 37.5% from three-point territory
  • SJLI shot 57.7% (15-for-26) on free throws compared to William Paterson's 68.8% (11-for-16) showing on free throws
  • The Golden Eagles received 29 bench points, while WP received 12
  • The hosts held the advantage in rebounds (42-34) and points in the paint (34-26)
