Men's Basketball Suffers First Conference Loss

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team fell to SUNY Maritime College, 67-63, in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:

  • Senior Spencer Malloy led the Golden Eagles with 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and tied the team-high in rebounds with seven
  • Senior Ryan McNeely scored 11 points, while Graduate Student Justin Forest contributed 10 points and six assists, which tied the game-high
  • Jake Devaney of the Privateers led all players with 18 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field and made four steals
  • Theo Noble scored 14 points with two steals and two assists
  • Evan Block scored 11 points with a game-high eight rebounds

How it happened:

  • Junior Anthony Todd scored the first basket of the game, then the Privateers went on an 11-2 run to take a lead of 11-4 on a three for Tyler Anderson at the 16:19 mark
  • Three-point baskets for Noble and Devaney over the next minute and a half put the visitors in the lead 17-6
  • The Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to seven three times in the next four minutes, before the Privateers went back up by 13 on three-point baskets for Jovan Germain and Anthony Lang to extend the lead to 27-14 at the 9:26 mark
  • SUNY Maritime took a 17-point lead (36-19) for their largest lead of the game on a free throw for Devaney with 4:31 on the clock
  • St. Joseph's responded with three-pointers for Graduate Student Matthew Coletti and McNeely to trim the deficit to 11 (36-25)
  • The hosts cut the lead to 10 (38-28) on another Coletti three with 1:52 remaining
  • Forest made a layup with 50 seconds remaining to cut the lead to eight, then Anderson scored a layup of his own with five seconds left in the half
  • Seconds later, McNeely made a deep three that beat the buzzer to put the Golden Eagles within seven (40-33) at the half
  • SJLI scored the first five points of the second half to trim the lead to two points (40-38) two minutes in. Malloy scored four of those points
  • The Privateers responded by scoring the next five points to go back up by seven (45-38) on a dunk for Devaney at the 15:53 mark
  • Trailing by four, sophomore AJ Esposito made two free throws to trim the deficit to two points (47-45) with 10:25 on the clock
  • Seconds later, McNeely delivered a layup to tie the game at 47 at the 10:02 mark
  • SUNY Maritime proceeded to go on a 6-0 run after the tie, with Devaney scoring five points to put the visitors up 53-47 with 8:17 remaining
  • After a back-and-forth next couple of minutes, Esposito's layup at the 5:28 mark brought the hosts within five (59-54)
  • A Forest layup trimmed the lead to three (59-56), then shortly after junior Matthew Maxwell delivered a three to make it a one-point game (60-59) with 3:43 remaining
  • Devaney responded with a three-point play to put the Privateers back up by four with 3:06 on the clock
  • Malloy made a basket to cut the lead to two (63-61), then Evan Block responded with a three for SUNY Maritime before another basket for Malloy with 41 seconds remaining made it a one possession game (66-63)
  • Jake Murphy made a free throw for the visitors to increase the lead back to four (67-63), which is how the game ended

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 44.8% from the field and 22.7% from three-point territory
  • The Privateers posted a 41.4% shooting percentage overall and shot 30.8% from beyond the arc
  • SUNY Maritime held the advantage in rebounds 37-33
  • The Golden Eagles out-scored the Privateers in the paint (36-22)
  • SJLI received 29 points from their bench compared to SUNY Maritime's 10

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, January 8 when they host Farmingdale State College for a conference match-up at the Danzi Center at 7:00pm.
