Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team picked up a pair of Skyline Conference wins against SUNY Purchase at Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles shut out the Panthers 5-0 in game one before an 11-1 win in game two.

Game one: SJLI 5; Purchase 0 (7 inn.)

Key Players:

  • Junior AJ Joya finished 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, and three RBIs

  • Senior starter Peter Manger tossed a complete game shutout scattering eight hits while striking out three

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles scored early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Joya sent a two-RBI triple down the left-field line sending home Dom Crema and John Lynch who had reached via walk and a single earlier in the inning

  • Two more runs for the hosts came in the bottom of the fourth. Joya walked to start the inning and scored when a dropped third strike was thrown to first. A batter later, James Maggio's soft fly to right found some green sending in Mike DiFillipo and moving the score to 4-0

  • St. Joseph's added some insurance with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Jordan Ramlogan was hit by a pitch and came around to score in a double to left by Joya

  • The Panthers had two runners on in the top of the seventh, but Manger got Brandon Gonzalez to fly out to center to record the final out

Game two: SJLI 11; Purchase 1 (7 inn.)

Key Players:

  • Joya finished 2-for-2 with a double, and a triple with two runs scored and an RBI

  • Sophomore Marco Gullo went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored

  • SJLI Starter Jack Kelly earned the win going the distance allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's batted around in the bottom of the first putting up five runs on seven hits. Joe Hackal got things started with a lead off blast over the right field fence. Crema singled to right with one out and three extra-base hits followed adding three more runs. Catcher Marco Gullo's RBI infield single capped the scoring with SJLI ahead 5-0

  • Following a scoreless second, the Golden Eagles added three runs in the third. Gullo knocked in two runs with a base hit through the right side and then came in to score on a single to right off the bat of Jordan Ramlogan

  • St. Joseph's added a run in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings before the Panthers broke up the shutout with a run in the top of the sixth. Gonzalez led off with a base hit to right before getting lifted for pinch runner Luke DiLorenzo who scored on a ground out to short a few batters later

  • SJLI quickly got it back in the bottom half of the six when John Lynch drew a walk and was knocked in on a double down the left field line by DiFillipo putting the hosts ahead 11-1

  • Kelly was able to pitch around a two-out hit getting pinch hitter Elian Herrera swinging for the final out invoking the 10-run mercy rule
