Softball Completes Sweep Against Brooklyn College

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team takes down Brooklyn College in back-to-back games to stay unbeaten on the season. 

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Sophomore Jacqueline Flannery led the Golden Eagles, going 2-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and one run batted in
  • Senior Julia Ruocchio added two hits, one run, and three RBIs
  • Senior Antonia Busa finished with one hit, two runs scored, and one RBI
  • Junior Caitlyn Herzing earned the win, pitching five innings, collecting seven strikeouts, and allowing four runs on seven hits

How it happened:

  • After both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first two innings, it was the Golden Eagles who secured the first run as Flannery singled, allowing Brooke Bove to score 
  • Later in the inning back to back triples from Ruochhio and Busa, each bringing in one run to score before Alexandria LaBaraba finished the scoring off in the inning with an RBI single
  • St. Joseph's kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning as Brooklyn tied the game with four runs on just two hits 
  • SJLI responded in the top of the seventh inning after Flannery and Busa each got on base, a Ruocchio single brought both base runners in to score to take a 6-4 advantage
  • Brooklyn looked to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the final inning as with the bases loaded with two outs, a batter was walked to make it a one-score game before St. Joseph's collected the final out of the game to secure a 6-5 victory for game one

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Senior Julia Ruocchio was 3-3 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored
  • Junior Brooke Bove contributed two hits and two runs scored
  • Sophomore Jacquline Flannery posted two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI
  • Freshman Ava Inserra secured one hit, one run scored, and four RBIs
  • Junior Kimberly Ehman posted two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles claimed an early lead in the first inning, securing six runs on six hits, highlighted by a Ruocchio two-RBI triple and followed by a Gabriella Vacchio RBI triple to left field 
  • After the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, St. Joseph's responded by collecting four runs in the second inning on just two hits to take an early 10-2 lead
  • The top of the third inning saw SJLI again add to their lead as Mariah Salvatto and Busa both secured RBI singles, with Ruocchio collecting another RBI triple on the night
  • St. Joseph's went on to score three more runs in the final two innings while holding Brooklyn College to just one more run for the remainder of the game as they secured a 16-3 victory in game two
