Baseball Sweeps Purchase in Regular Season Finale, 5-2, 12-7

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team ended its regular season with a Skyline Conference sweep at Purchase College on Friday evening. The Golden Eagles pulled out a 5-2 win in the opener before a four-run eighth inning brought them back to a 12-7 win in game two.

Game one: SJLI 5; Purchase 2

Key Players:

  • Senior Anselmo Joya went 2-for-4 with a double and a run

  • Senior John Lynch recorded a double and two RBI

  • Junior Dom Crema had a hit and scored twice

  • Senior starter Jack Kelly improved to 5-2 on the season, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in a complete game effort

How it happened:

  • Lynch's double down the right field line in the top of the second knocked in Crema, who reached on an error, and Joe Hacka,l who drew a walk earlier in the inning, 2-0

  • Purchase got a run back in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Liam Daly, 2-1, before knotting the score at 2 when a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth resulted in an RBI for Mason Compton

  • An error by the Purchase second baseman gave St. Joseph's a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth before Marco Gullo added some insurance with an RBI in the seventh, 5-2

  • Kelly managed to pitch around a two-out infield single in the bottom of the ninth for his second complete game of the season

Game two: SJLI 12; OW 7

Key Players:

  • Senior Mike DiFilippo finished 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs

  • Lynch went 3-for-6 with two RBI and scored a run

  • Sophomore Rob Page was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs

  • Junior Joe Thatcher was 2-for-5 with a triple, three RBI, and a run

  • Senior reliever Chris Perri earned the win, tossing 7.1 scoreless innings out of the pen, allowing just one hit and a season-best eight strikeouts 

How it happened:

  • Purchase scored in the bottom of the first when a double by Evan Biener knocked in a pair of runs, 2-0

  • The Golden Eagles returned the favor in the top of the second when three consecutive two-out doubles by Crema, Page, and DiFilippo evened the score, 2-2

  • The Panthers went on to bat around in the bottom half of the second stringing five hits together for five runs and a 7-2 advantage

  • SJLI began to chip away when back-to-back RBI singles from Hackal and Lynch plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, 7-4

  • Jordan Ramlogan was hit by a pitch to start the fifth, and after swiping second and third, he scored on a wild pitch, 7-5. A couple of batters later, Page knocked in James Maggio, who walked earlier in the inning, inching the Golden Eagles to within one, 7-6

  • Much like the fifth, Hackal drew a walk to start the sixth and after stealing second and third, came into score on a ground out to the right side, 7-7

  • Following a scoreless seventh, St. Joseph's sent nine Golden Eagles to the plate in the top of the eighth. DiFilippo and Lynch both singled to right, putting runners on the corners with two outs for Thatcher, who drilled a triple to right, scoring both runners and giving visitors their first lead of the game, 9-7. A wild pitch, heads-up base running, and an infield single resulted in two more runs and an 11-7 lead

  • A sac fly by Thatcher added some insurance in the top of the ninth, 12-7, before Perri retired the Panthers in order to secure the win

Next up, the Golden Eagles clinched a spot in the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament. Seeding and opponents will be determined at the conclusion of conference play.
