Softball's Season Ends As Comeback Falls Short Against MSMC

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team falls short in round one of the Skyline Conference Championship to #4 Mt. St. Mary's College.

How it happened:

  • As both teams would go scoreless in the first inning, MSMC would find the first runs scored of the game in the bottom of the second inning, as a RBI double to left center was the highlight of the inning
  • The Knights would add to their lead in the third inning with a RBI single up the middle, followed by a sacrifice fly to center field that brought an additional run to score, making the score 4-0
  • A lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth allowed another run to score for Mt. St. Mary's on a groundout to second base later in the inning
  • Mt. St. Mary's ended the sixth inning, scoring two more runs on just two hits in the inning, holding a 7-0 lead heading into the final inning
  • SJLI looked to rally in the top of the seventh with a Vacchio double to left center, setting up Salvatto for an RBI double down the right field line to score their first run of the game
  • Ehman would come into the game to pinch-hit with two runners on base and secured a two-RBI double down the right field line to make it a four-run game, 7-3
  • An error on behalf of MSMC allowed another run to score, allowing Busa to double to left center, driving in Emily Fenezia to score, cutting the deficit to just two
  • With two outs in the inning, the Golden Eagles have the tying run at the plate as Ruocchio blasted the ball over the right field wall for her first homerun of her career, tying the game, as SJLI totaled seven runs on eight hits
  • As the game went into extra innings, the Knights would propel ahead in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 8-7 victory
