Men's Basketball Bounce Back With Win Over UMSV

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team used hot three-point shooting and balanced scoring to pull away for an 85-70 win over UMSV in Skyline Conference action.

Top performers:

  • Senior Kenny Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles with 22 points (7-13 FG, 5-7 3PT), 8 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in 35 minutes of play
  • Senior TayShaun Hawkins added 21 points (7-14 FG, 7-10 3PT), 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block
  • Junior Jaiden Gaston contributed 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-4 3PT), 3 rebounds, and 1 assist
  • Sophomore AJ Esposito posted a solid double-figure effort with 10 points (4-10 FG), 9 rebounds, and 4 assists
  • For UMSV, Eric Woodberry led all scorers with 26 points (11-22 FG, 2-8 3PT), 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals
  • Joel Gado recorded a double-double of 17 points (8-15 FG) and 12 rebounds (3 off, 9 def), plus 3 steals and 1 block
  • Louis Vidal added 10 points (2-9 FG, 2-6 3PT), 4-4 FT, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists

How it happened:

  • SJLI jumped out early with Rodriguez hitting a three-pointer just 33 seconds in to make it 3-0; Hawkins followed with another triple for an 8-3 lead by the 18:05 mark
  • UMSV responded with some timely shooting, including a three from Vidal and layups from Gado, but the Golden Eagles maintained control with strong interior play from Esposito and Hawkins' outside touch
  • By the midway point of the first half, SJLI pushed the lead to double digits thanks to a series of assists from Rodriguez and Hawkins connecting on threes
  • The Privateers cut it close late in the half with Woodberry and Vidal hitting threes, tying it briefly at 39-39 before Hawkins drained a three late in the first half to propel SJLI into halftime up 43-41
  • In the second half, the Golden Eagles quickly extended the margin again—Hawkins hit a three for a 51-42 lead, then Rodriguez and Kubelka added more triples to advance the lead
  • UMSV fought back with Woodberry's scoring bursts and some free throws from Vidal, getting as close as 62-54 midway through the period
  • SJLI responded with a key run featuring Rodriguez's threes and Hawkins' outside shooting, stretching the lead to 78-60 with under three minutes left
  • The Golden Eagles closed strong with solid defense (holding UMSV to lower shooting in the half) and timely buckets in the final minute, securing the 15-point win

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 48.4% from the field (30-62) and an impressive 53.6% from beyond the arc (15-28)
  • The Golden Eagles held UMSV to 36.1% shooting (26-72) and 22.9% from three (8-35)
  • SJLI won the assist battle 24-11 and committed 
  • Rebounding was close (UMSV 39-41), but the home team dominated in three-point makes (15 vs. 8)

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Mount Saint Mary College (NY) for a conference matchup at noon.
