Baseball Sweeps Mt. St. Mary's

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader with Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) at Gregg Alfano Field on Monday afternoon. The Golden Eagles cruised to a 19-6 mercy-rule victory in the opener before adding an 11-2 win in the nightcap.

  • Paul McNally went 2-for-2 with two doubles, six RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks
  • Ryan Kurre finished 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and a walk
  • Frankie Asaro went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored, and a hit-by-pitch
  • Joe Hackal contributed 1-for-3 with a triple, four runs scored, two RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base
  • Andrew Amarando added 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two walks, a run scored, and a stolen base,

How it happened - Game One:

  • Mount St. Mary jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. 
  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) responded with six runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Asaro's two-RBI double and McNally's three-RBI double, to take a 6-3 lead. 
  • The Golden Eagles added five more in the third inning on RBI hits from Asaro and McNally plus multiple wild pitches to extend the lead to 11-4. 
  • After trading runs in the fourth and fifth, SJLI exploded for six runs in the sixth, capped by another two-RBI double from McNally. 
  • Ryan Callaghan (W, 2-1) earned the victory, throwing five innings with six strikeouts.

Key Players - Game Two:

  • Ryan Kurre went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, two stolen bases, and two walks
  • Paul McNally finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI, and two walks
  • Andrew Amarando contributed three hits including a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base
  • Joe Thatcher added two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI
  • Dom Crema posted two hits including a triple and a run scored
  • Frankie Asaro and Owen Shortell each drove in a run

How it happened - Game Two:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) took control early, scoring one in the first on Thatcher's RBI double.
  • The Golden Eagles erupted for five runs in the second and three more in the third — highlighted by RBI singles from Owen Shortell and Kurre, a sacrifice fly from Asaro, and multiple unearned runs due to Mount St. Mary errors and wild pitches — to build an 8-0 lead. 
  • SJLI added two more in the sixth on McNally's RBI double and a wild pitch. 
  • Charles Aurandt (W, 1-2) earned the win with six strong innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs. 
  • Mount St. Mary scored its only two runs in the seventh on a two-RBI triple, but SJLI added one final run for the 11-2 victory.

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) recorded 31 hits across both games (16 in Game One, 15 in Game Two) while drawing 18 walks combined.
  • SJLI improved to 10-9 overall and 7-1 in Skyline Conference play with the sweep.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, April 3, when they host St. John Fisher for a single game starting at 2:00 pm.
