Softball Upends Farmingdale Rams Twice to Bolster Skyline Record

Patchogue, N.Y.- The St. Joseph's softball team (16-11, 9-2) continued to roll through Skyline competitors on Wednesday as they took two games from Farmingdale State (12-10, 5-3), 6-2 and 7-1.  The Golden Eagles received solid pitching performances from starters Mallory McClafferty (6-3) and Lauren Buturla (5-6) and key homers from Julianne Tierney (twice), Nicole Reda and Gabrielle Cinquemani.

In game one, Farmingdale drew first blood with an RBI double and single to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the third.  The SJC bats were quiet until the fifth when Megan Leun double to center to drove in Lindsey Corriss, who reached on a single, to cut it to 2-1.   In the top of the sixth, Nicole Reda homered with two outs to tie the game at 2-2.  Tara Bernocco and Gianna Gulli then drew back-to-back walks to set up an RBI single by Corriss to stretch the lead to 4-2.

St. Joseph's struck for two more in the seventh to create a cushion as Tierney led off by going yard with a homer.  Melanie Boccio would later single up the middle to bring in Cheyenne Raimondi and Madeline Sganga (both pinch runners) for the final score of 6-2.

McClafferty pitched all seven innings giving up ten hits and five walks but only allowed two earned runs to keep the Eagles in the game.

In the second game, SJC took control in the second inning with three big runs via RBI base hits by Gulli, Leun and Tierney.  The score stayed unchanged until Tierney went deep to leftfield for her second homer of the day, this time a two-run blast, making it 5-0.

Farmingdale scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth on an infield single but SJC added one more in both the sixth and seventh.  In the sixth Corriss tripled and then came home as Leun reached on a Rams error.  Cinquemani got into the long ball contest with a solo shot to left center capping the scoring at 7-1.

Buturla pitched threw seven terrific innings allowing only one earned run, five hits and one walk and struck out two for the win.

Next on the docket for the softball team is a non-conference double-dip with William Paterson before finishing out their regular season Skyline schedule with a single game vs. Mt. St. Vincent on Friday and a double with Mt. St Mary Saturday.  All five games are at the SJC Outdoor Field Complex.
