St. Joseph's Beats Maritime in Great Skyline Tournament Start

Box Score

Patchogue, N.Y. – Top-seed St. Joseph's (20-15) defeated Maritime (12-17) in the first game of the Skyline Conference Baseball Tournament, 13-2.  The Golden Eagles now advance to the 10 a.m. game on Saturday and will face #2 Old Westbury, who beat #3 Farmingdale State, 2-1.

Maritime wasted no time in getting the scoring started off SJC starter Ryan Aloise in the first as second basemen Chris Deddo walked to lead off the game and shortstop Joe Longo followed with a two-run homer that went over the leftfield fence for a 2-0 lead.

St. Joseph's loaded the bases in the third off Privateer starter Tyler Stuart on two walks by Ryan Walsh and Anthony Bonilla followed by James Nakashian's single, but SJC could not get the clutch hit.

Aloise got out of trouble as Maritime started a two out rally in the fourth but he got Aaron Schiavoni swinging to end the frame.

Golden Eagle Joseph Calabrese led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to the left field corner but again SJC could not get the base runner home.

A Maritime walk by Deddo and an infield single by Longo put two on with one out but again Aloise wiggled out of it without damage.

A Joseph Lynn walk, a Bonilla hit by pitch and a Nick Girardi walk would load the bases for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fifth and then Stuart hit Calabrese with a pitch to bring home their first run.  A hot shot to Stuart ended the threat.

Stuart was relieved in the top of the sixth by Anthony D'Ancona.  He allowed one run on three hits and four walks and was the pitcher of record upon departure.

Bonilla brought home James Terry (HBP) and Walsh (walk) with a two-run double down the leftfield line to jump SJC ahead, 3-2.  Nakashian hit a bunt single moving Bonilla to third, and then stole second.  A wild pitch on a Girardi strikeout plated Bonilla and then Brendan Sullivan singled to score Nakashian, making it 5-2.  Calabrese singled home Girardi to bring it to 6-2.  A fielder's choice by Andreani brought Sullivan in for the seventh run resulting in five total in the inning.

Walsh started it off in the seventh with a single and a steal, Lynn grounded out and then Bonilla walked. Nakashian singled through the left side scoring Walsh, and Girardi was hit by a pitch.  With the bases loaded Sullivan singled home two more for a 10-2 lead.  A double steal moved the runners up and Andreani walked to reload, but the rally ended there.

SJC added three in the eighth as Bonilla and Nakashian each drove in another with a base hit and one came in on a double play.

Aloise went the distance for St. Joseph's as he allowed six hits, and three walks with seven strikeouts.  D'Ancona (4-4) took the loss as he allowed six earned runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Nakashian went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, Bonilla was 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI and two walks, Sullivan was 2-for-6 with a run and three RBI and Calabrese went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
