Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Maritime; 5-1, 6-5

Throggs Neck, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Maritime College, winning the opener, 5-1, before dropping the second game, 6-5. The Golden Eagles now fall to 10-7 (3-3 Skyline) on the season as Maritime now improves to 15-8 (3-3 Skyline) on the year.   

Game 1

After two scoreless innings the Golden Eagles were able put a run across the board after a Nick Girardi triple that plated James Nakashian

The following two inning were quit until Joe Lynn singled up the middle in the sixth inning.  Lynn would steal both second and third which created an RBI opportunity for Daniel Campanelli, who worked a seven pitch at-bat to drive in Lynn for the 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Chris Deddo led the inning off with a double, and Brian McLaughlin earned an RBI after grounding out to Joseph Calabrese to cut Maritime's deficit by one (2-1).
In the top of the eight, Lynn took the first pitch he saw and put it over the right field fence to put the Golden Eagles back to a two run lead 3-1.

In the top of the nighth, St. Joseph's added an insurance run after a wild pitch scored Campanelli and Anthony Bonillaadvanced to second.  Nick Girardi delivered his second RBI of the afternoon with a single to left center that scored Bonilla.

Steve Szobesky came into the game in the ninth inning, shutting down Maritime to seal the 5-1 victory.

Ryan Aloise tossed eight innings, while allowing four hits, and striking out nine batters.

 

Game 2

In the bottom half of the opening frame the Privateers had the bases with no one out when McLaughlin singled to drive in the opening run.  Deddo would score on a wild pitch to take a quick 2-0 lead over the Golden Eagles, following back-to-back wild pitches Maritime had a 4-0 lead without any outs.  Szobesky would take the mound to replace Girardi, giving up the fifth run of the inning.

After a 1-2-3 second inning by both teams, the Golden Eagles had runners in scoring position after a Bonilla single and stolen base. Nakashian drove in Ryan Walsh from third, beating out an infield single. Shortly after, Girardi singled to the right fielder to plate Bonilla to cut the deficit 5-2. 

The Mariners would score again on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to take the 6-2 advantage.

The Golden Eagles would take advantage with runners in scoring position as Tyler Crafa scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half (6-3).

St. Joseph's threaten again in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded. Bonilla scored on a wild pitch to inch SJC back within two (6-4). Brenan Sullivan drove Nakashian as the Golden Eagles now trailed the host by one. After a walk, that loaded the bases, Lynn could not bring the tying run to score as the Golden Eagles dropped their contest 6-5.

The Golden Eagles will now take on St. Joseph's College (Brkln) on Saturday April 16 at 12:30 PM. The game will be played at Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue, NY but will count as a home game for the Bears.
