Softball Takes Two From Old Westbury

Written by Andrew Capitelli (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Old Westbury, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team extended its winning streak to five games on Sunday afternoon with a road sweep of SUNY Old Westbury, 2-1 and 5-2, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader.

With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 7-7 on the year and remain perfect in conference play (4-0) as the Panthers drop to 3-5 (3-5 Skyline).

SJC 2, Old Westbury 1

In a game that produced only eight hits St. Joseph's got on the board first in the top of the third when Madeline Sganga (1-for-4) advanced home on a throwing error by the Old Westbury shortstop.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to two runs (2-0) in the top of the sixth when Camella Femoyer (1-for-1) scored Therese Cardello (0-for-1) with an RBI single to left center.

Old Westbury brought one back in the bottom of the sixth when Lauren Bloom homered (2-1), but it wouldn't be enough as SJC held off the Panthers.

Cardello earned her fourth win of the season (4-2), striking out six batters in a complete game effort.

SJC 5, Old Westbury 2

Amanda Neenan's sacrifice hit in the bottom of the second and Kate Rizzo's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth saw Old Westbury build a 2-0 lead in the second game of the twin bill, but a game-changing sixth inning for the Golden Eagles saw them take control.

Lyndsay Smocer (2-for-3, 3 RBI) tied the game at two when her single down the left field line scored both Kristen Arbiter (2-for-4) and Sganga (2-for-4). Ashley Steponaitis (0-for-4) put SJC in front with a groundout to short that sent Cardello home. Sandra Foster's (1-for-3) RBI single would wrap the inning's scoring as St. Joseph's took a 4-2 lead into the seventh.

Smocer's RBI single to right center in the top of the seventh would be the final run of the game as the Golden Eagles earned the 5-2 win.

Lauren Buturla (2-4) pitched a complete game and struck out one batter.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 5 when they travel to Fordham University to face Yeshiva University at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
