Farmingdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team saw its 2019 season come to an end on Saturdat afternoon after suffering a pair of losses to Farmingdale State, 7-6, and Mt. St. Mary College, 2-1, in Games 6 and 7 of the Skyline Conference Championship.
SJC bows out of the double-elimination tournament and wraps its season with a 20-15 overall record. Farmingdale and Mt. St. Mary will meet in Game 8 and possibly a Game 9 if necessary.
Game 6: Farmingdale 7, SJC 6 (10 innings)
Junior Meagan McClinchey (3-for-5) opened the scoring in the first half when her double to left center scored three runs and put SJC ahead early (3-0).
After freshman Jenna DeFina (1-for-3) scored junior Elise Grau (2-for-5) with a fly out to center field in the top of the fourth, sophomore Zoe Kelly (1-for-4) advanced home on an error and extended SJC's lead to 5-0.
St. Joseph's scored a sixth run in the fifth inning when freshman Patricia McGloin (0-for-0) advanced home on a wild pitch, but in the bottom of the sixth the Rams brough two runs back and cut the deficit to four (6-2).
Farmingdale tied the game up at six in the bottom of the seventh and went on to win in walk-off fashion in the 10th inning when Sierra Cardenales (2-for-5) scored Julianna Prescia (0-for-5) with an RBI single to left field.
Freshman hurler Catherine Zucker tossed six innings, struck out five and allowed one earned run. Freshman Katelynn Valente allowed three runs in the seventh inning and junior Alyssa Rivera provided 2.1 further innings of relief and took the loss.
Game 7: Mt. St. Mary 2, SJC 1
Mt. St. Mary broke the scoring deadlock in the fourth inning with an RBI single down the right field line. A struggling SJC offense finally got on the board in the top of the seventh when DeFina singled through the left side and scored sophomore Aryana Caputo.
The Knights responded in the bottom of the seventh with another RBI single to hand SJC its second walk-off defeat of the afternoon.
Valente struck out 10 batters and allowed five hits in a complete-game effort.
