Softball Splits with Mt. St. Mary in Regular-Season Finale

Newburgh, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team wrapped the 2021 regular season with a doubleheader split, 5-4, 3-12, at Mount St. Mary College on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles move to 13-7 overall on the year and 11-6 in Skyline Conference play. They will enter the double-elimination Skyline Conference Championship tournament--set to begin Friday, May 14--as the third seed. The Knights improve to 15-10 and 12-8 and qualify as the fourth seed.

Game 1: SJC 5, MSMC 4
Kassandra Tibbetts (1-for-3) put SJC up 2-0 in the first inning when she belted a two-run homer to right center and Lindsay Ness (1-for-3) extended the lead to three runs (3-0) with an RBI single in the third.

The Knights brought one back in the fourth (3-2) but Lauren Crawford (3-for-4) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to double SJC up over the hosts (4-2).

Mt. St. Mary tied the contest at four in the sixth inning, but it was Crawford's RBI double to left center that scored Jenna DeFina (2-for-4) in the top of the fifth that fired SJC to a 5-4 victory.

Patricia McGloin (0-for-3) struck out four and allowed two earned runs to secure her eighth win of the season.

Game 2: MSMC 12, SJC 3
The Knights posted four runs in the first inning and eight in the second to go ahead 12-0 early.

Scoreless until the top of the fifth, SJC got on the board (12-1) when DeFina (1-for-2) singled to right, scoring Julia Ruocchio (1-for-1).

Later in the inning, Crawford (0-for-2) reached first on a throwing error by the MSMC pitcher, enabling both DeFina and Bailey Rand (0-for-2) to score (12-3).

Ruocchio allowed six earned runs and took the loss for SJC.

The Golden Eagles will face second-seeded Manhattanville on Friday in their first contest of the 2021 Skyline Conference Softball Championship at Farmingdale State. A win would see the Golden Eagles advance to the winners semifinal on Saturday. A loss would force them to play an elimination game later on Friday.
