Women's Basketball Claims Non-Conference Win Over Mitchell, 67-54

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team picked up a 67-54 win over Mitchell College in a non-conference showdown at the Danzi Center on Friday evening.

Top performers:

  • Senior Lanyah Ford powered the Golden Eagles with 21 points and nine rebounds.

  • Graduate Julianna Knice scored 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 6-for-11 from three-point range while adding three assists

  • Graduate Casey Travers added 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists

  • The Mariners were led by Yasmine Santos, who recorded a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds

  • Jermia Dumas scored 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting with five rebounds

How it happened:

  • Mitchell College took an early 5-0 lead, then led 7-2 halfway through the quarter

  • Shortly after, Ford made three consecutive baskets, with her first tying the game at seven and her last giving the hosts a 12-7 advantage

  • Ford's baskets were part of a 12-0 run for St. Joseph's, which was capped by a layup for Junior Hannah Greene, which put the hosts up 14-7

  • The Golden Eagles scored six unanswered points to finish the quarter while limiting their opposition to two points in the second half of the quarter to finish the first with a 20-9 lead

  • The Golden Eagles scored six of the first nine points of the second quarter, then the Mariners went on a 9-3 run to trim their deficit to eight (29-21) late in the quarter

  • Three-point shots for Knice and Ford fueled an 8-2 run for the hosts to finish the quarter, as St. Joseph's went into the break up 37-23

  • After a back-and-forth beginning of the third quarter, two straight baskets for the Mariners' Santos cut the lead to single digits (41-32) at the 5:12 mark

  • Mitchell College scored seven straight points with two minutes remaining in the quarter to come within seven (46-39), then Knice's basket with 50 seconds remaining brought the Golden Eagles to 50 points and sent them into the final frame up by 11 (50-39)

  • Ford scored five straight points for SJLI to begin the fourth, extending the lead to 15 (55-40) for their largest lead of the game.

  • The Mariners crept closer, as they went on a 7-0 run to make it an eight-point game (55-47) on Dumas' three-point basket at the 6:55 mark

  • Travers proceeded to score five consecutive points which included a three-point play at the 4:22 mark to extend the lead to 60-47

  • Mitchell College came as close as eight in the fourth, but a pair of three-point baskets for the Golden Eagles courtesy of Travers and Knice sealed a 67-54 non-conference win

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's posted a 37.1% shooting percentage from the field and 32.4% from three-point range

  • The Mariners shot 35.3% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc

  • The Golden Eagles held the advantage in points in the paint 20-16, while the Mariners out-rebounded SJLI 42-38

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, December 29, when they take on Connecticut College for a non-conference match-up at 3:00 pm at the Danzi Center.
