The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team fell to Yeshiva University, 101-88, in conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Sunday afternoon.
Top performers:
- Junior Xavier Allen led the Golden Eagles with 28 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field, while adding five rebounds and five assists
- Junior Alec Tabada scored 23 points, 22 of which came in the second half, and led the team with eight rebounds
- Senior Spencer Malloy added 16 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of steals while shooting 8-for-11 from the field
- Junior Thomas Bell recorded a game-high seven assists and a pair of steals
- Zevi Samet paced Yeshiva with 38 points on 15-for-24 shooting from the field and went 6-for-11 from beyond the arc
- Max Zakheim scored 37 points for the Maccabees, shooting 13-for-15 from the floor and 8-for-11 on free throws, while adding six rebounds, five assists, and three steals
- Roy Itcovichi grabbed a game-high nine rebounds with four assists
How it happened:
- After Malloy scored the first points of the game, Yeshiva went on a substantial 16-2 run to take a 16-4 lead at the 13:28 mark. Zakheim scored nine of the 16 points for Yeshiva during the run
- About two and a half minutes later, Yeshiva scored 13 straight points to take a lead of 24 (32-8) at the 8:37 mark for their largest lead of the game. Samet fueled the run with eight points, including a pair of three-point shots
- During that scoring outburst, the Maccabees put up a 30 spot in the first 10 minutes of the half, with Samet's three at the 10:19 mark extending the lead to 22
- The Golden Eagles responded by scoring nine of the next 13 points to cut the lead to below 20 (36-17) with 6:40 remaining
- Following a dunk by Effy Freundlich at the 5:25 mark that put the visitors behind by 23 (40-17), St. Joseph's responded with their biggest scoring run of the afternoon, scoring 11 consecutive points to come within 12 (40-28) at the 1:53 mark. Allen, Malloy, and Roy all scored during the run
- Samet and Allen exchanged baskets three times to finish the first half, as the hosts went into the break trailing 46-32
- Tabada scored the first nine points for St. Joseph's in a back-and-forth first three minutes of the second, with his final basket trimming the lead to 11 (52-41) at the 17:09 mark
- Shortly after, Yeshiva proceeded to go on a 13-3 run to increase their lead to 24 (76-52) with 11:19 on the clock
- Allen made a three at the 8:33 mark that sparked a 12-2 run for the hosts, with Tabada's three cutting the deficit to 11 (82-71) with 6:08 remaining
- Zakheim scored six straight points to make it a 17-point game, then Tabada responded by scoring five points of his own before a Roy layup brought SJLI within 10 (88-78) with 3:26 remaining
- The Golden Eagles remained close for the next two minutes, coming as close as eight (95-87) at the 1:28 mark, then the Maccabees scored six of the final seven points of the game to come away with a 101-88 win, as SJLI suffers their third loss in conference play
Notes:
- St. Joseph's shot 53% from the field and 41.2% from beyond the arc
- Yeshiva posted a 67.2% shooting percentage from the floor and 52.2% from three-point range
- St. Joseph's out-scored Yeshiva 56-55 in the second half
- The Maccabees held the advantage in points in the paint (52-46) and rebounds (30-29)
