Baseball Starts Skyline Schedule with a Sweep of Yeshiva

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team opened Skyline Conference play with a pair of wins over Yeshiva University on Wednesday afternoon.

Game One: SJLI 21, YU 2 (7 innings)
Key Players:
  • Senior Phil Krpata went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. The right fielder drove in five RBIs, scored three runs, and swiped two bases

  • Sophomore James Maggio was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a run scored

  • Junior Joe Sanguedolce had a 3-for-4 showing with an RBI and a run scored

  • Freshman Joe Hackal reached on all three at-bats with two hits and walk

  • Sophomore Josh Dannenberg earned his second win of the season allowing just two hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work

How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's batted around in the first inning highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Krpata for an early 8-0 lead

  • Another seven runs came in by way of four hits and one Yeshiva miscue for the visitors in the top of the third to move the score to 15-0

  • SJLI widened the gap, 17-0, in the fifth courtesy of a two-run home run from junior Thomas Gray 

  • Sophomore Brendan Eising and Hackal combined for four RBIs in the top of the seventh for a 21-0 advantage

  • The Maccabees managed to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh when David Price doubled in Jacob Rodin and Jacob Shakin who singled earlier in the inning

Game Two: SJLI 23, YU 1
Key Players:
  • Senior Nick Vicino went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of triples. The first baseman knocked in four runs and scored two

  • Senior Jake Giannico finished with three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI

  • Senior John Thatcher recorded three hits including a double with two RBIs and two runs scored 

  • Junior Peter Manger earned his second win of the season allowing just one run on three hits with a career-best 10 strikeouts in five innings of work

How it happened:
  • Senior Ryan Decoursey's RBI triple in the top of the first knocked in Paul Gugliuzzo who singled to left earlier in the inning

  • After plating a couple of runs in the second, the Golden Eagles took advantage of three YU defensive errors paired with three hits to produce six runs for a 9-0 lead

  • Vicino's three-RBI triple capped an eight-run top of the fourth to put SJLI ahead 17-0

  • Yeshiva got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Benjamin Brener led off the inning with a single to right and came in to score on a wild pitch two batters later

  • The Golden Eagles tacked on six more runs over the final two innings and claim their second win of the day

Next up, the Golden Eagles will host Farmingdale State College for a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Friday, March 31 at 1:00 pm.
