Baseball Claims Back-to-Back Skyline Championship Titles with 10-4 Win Over Maritime

The top-seeded St. Joseph's University (L.I.) baseball team claimed their second straight Skyline Conference tournament championship with a 10-4 win over #2 SUNY Maritime at Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday afternoon.

How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's scored first with four runs in the top of the second. Lynch starred the inning with a double down the right field line and came into score on an RBI double by Maggio. A couple of batters later, Abreu sent a two-out RBI single into left. Phil Krpata followed suit with a base hit down the left-field line. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Abreu scored on an infield hit from Paul Gugliuzzo. Jake Giannico followed with an RBI single to right bringing in Krpata 

  • Maritime got two runs back in the bottom of the second when Michael Frazzetta blasted a two-run home run to left

  • SJLI added a run in the top of the fourth when Krpata scored on a sac fly from Gugliuzzo, 5-2

  • The Privateers responded in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Milone started the inning with a base hit to left setting up a two-run blast by Rob Copozzi bringing Maritime to within one, 5-4

  • The Golden Eagles batted around for four runs on three hits in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two-RBI double from Maggio and RBIs from Vicino and Giannico to take a 9-4 lead

  • Manzolillo retired the Privateers in order in the bottom half of the eighth before pitching around a couple of walks in the ninth to secure the 10-4 win

Notes:
  • Manzolillo got the win provided five innings of scoreless relief without allowing a hit while fanning four 

  • SJLI starter Ryan Foran went four innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three

  • Maritime's Joseph's Sorge took the loss surrendering four runs on six hits in two innings

  • For his efforts this weekend, .545 BA, 6-for-11, two doubles, a home run, seven runs, seven stolen bases, and three RBIs, Krpata was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Next up, the Golden Eagles advance to the DIII NCAA Regional Tournament and will learn their opponents during the selection show scheduled for Monday, May 15 at 12:00 pm.
