Three Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Routs Sarah Lawrence, 78-48

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team picks up a 78-48 win over Sarah Lawrence College in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Thursday evening. Three Golden Eagles finished with double-digit points.

Top performers:

  • Senior Lanyah Ford led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four steals
  • Junior Felicia Barreiros scored 12 points with four rebounds
  • Sophomore Megan Spina contributed 11 points with five rebounds and two steals
  • Khailand Anderson-Strawder scored a game-high 17 points for Sarah Lawrence, and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double
  • Ariana Spanopoulos added 12 points and shot 3-for-4 from three-point range with six rebounds

How it happened:

  • With the Gryphons leading 4-3 four minutes into the game, they scored six consecutive points on a pair of three-point baskets courtesy of Colleen Coughlin and Spanopoulos to extend their lead to seven (10-3) at the 5:30 mark
  • With St. Joseph's trailing by seven (13-6), Ford turned in a three-point play to begin a 7-0 run for the hosts to knot the game at 13 apiece at the 1:31 mark
  • A pair of free-throws for graduate Casey Travers gave the Golden Eagles a 15-13 lead, before the Gryphons scored the final four points of the quarter to finish the first frame with a lead of 17-15
  • The Golden Eagles tied the game at 17 on a layup for Travers to begin the second quarter, then they took a 20-17 lead shortly after on a three for junior Hannah Greene at the 8:13 mark
  • About a minute and a half later, St. Joseph's went on to score nine straight points, with Ford's three with 5:32 remaining giving the hosts a lead of 10 (29-19)
  • That 9-0 run was part of a massive 19-3 run over a span of five minutes for the Golden Eagles to take a lead of 39-22 on a basket for Ford at the 1:44 mark. Ford scored seven points during the run, and sophomore Emma Kelly scored six points
  • After Sarah Lawrence's Anderson-Strawder made a pair of free-throws, junior Isabella Sierra capped the quarter with a three from the corner with seven seconds remaining, giving the Golden Eagles a lead of 18 (42-24) going into the break
  • St. Joseph's continued that momentum by scoring eight of the first 10 points in the third quarter, with Barreiros scoring six consecutive points to increase the lead to 24 (50-26) at the 6:44 mark
  • About two and a half minutes later, Barreiros hit another three to increase the lead to 26 (56-30), which brought her to 10 points in the quarter
  • The Golden Eagles proceeded to extend that lead to 30 points on a layup for sophomore Gabrielle Andreacchi with 1:33 remaining in the quarter, before the hosts went into the final frame up 64-32
  • After each team exchanged baskets to begin the quarter, Spina made two consecutive layups to bring the Golden Eagles to 70 points with 6:07 on the clock. The second layup gave SJLI their largest lead of the game (36 points)
  • Sarah Lawrence proceeded to score nine consecutive points in the quarter, but the hosts still led by 26 with a minute to go before they finished the game with a 30-point advantage (78-48)

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 32.9% from the field and 28.6% from beyond the arc
  • The Gryphons were limited to a 25.8% shooting percentage from the field and 22.2% from three-point range
  • SJLI went 20-for-28 (71.4%) on free-throws, with the Gryphons going 12-for-19 (63.2%) from the line
  • The Golden Eagles held the advantage in rebounds (55-49), points in the paint (36-14), and assists (17-10)
  • St. Joseph's had 29 bench points compared to the Gryphons' six
