The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team secured their first season victory with a 10-6 win over Swee Briar College on Sunday evening.Â
Key Players:
- Freshman Jackie Flannery led the Golden Eagles, going 3-5 at the plate, to go along with two runs scored and two runs batted in
- Junior Gabriella Vacchio recorded two hits and one walk, adding three runs scored
- Sophomore Antonia Busa totaled two hits, two RBIs, and one run scored
- Junior Emily Fenezia went 2-3 at the plate, tallying two runs scored and two RBIs
- Sweet Briar's Kaylie Hudson finished 2-3, with one run scored and one run batted in
- Victoria Tew of the Vixens also secured two hits on three plate appearances, collecting one run scored and one RBI
How it happened:
- As the first two innings remained scoreless, the Golden Eagles secured the first two runs of the game in the top of the third when a Busa sacrifice fly brought home Vacchio to score followed by Fenezia reaching home plate on a wild pitch
- The Vixens would look to get back in the game in the fourth inning when an SJLI error led to one run scoring, followed by a Kaydin Wiliams two RBI double as Sweet Briar took a 3-2 lead
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sweet Briar would add to its lead on a sacrifice fly, allowing one run to score, then a single to first base saw another run score taking a 5-2 advantage
- SJLI would answer in the following inning as four hits and two errors permitted the Golden Eagles to score a total of five runs to take control of the game 7-5
- St. Joseph's added to their lead again in the seventh inning as they accumulated a total of five hits high,lighted by a Julia Ruocchio single to center field to close out the inning with a five five-run
- The Vixens would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was to latoo as SJLI secured their first victory of the season
