The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team falls to Mount Aloysius College in the season opener, 9-2 on Sunday morning.
Key Players:
- Sophomore Antonia Busa was 1-2 at the plate, hitting a double to right field and scoring one run
- Junior Emily Fenezia recorded one hit on two at-bats, securing one RBI in the process
- Freshman Samantha Lugo walked twice and scored one run for the Golden Eagles
- Mount Aloysius's Morgan Hassen was 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and one walk
- Sophie Smith of MAC recorded two hits on three appearances at the plate, adding two runs scored, three RBI, and one walk
How it happened:
- In the bottom of the first inning, MAC was able to collect an early two-run lead as Hassen would be walked, followed by a Smith home run that drove in the first two runs of the game
- Mount Aloysius collected three more runs as Kendra Garnder singled to center field, allowing one run to score
- The following two at-bats saw Maecy Tuskovich and Katelyn Garber both singled to right field brought home one run each, extending the MAC's lead to 5-0
- SJLI scored their first runs of the season in the top of the fourth when Fenezia hit a single to the infield that brought in two runs to score, cutting the Mounties' lead to just three
- Over the next two innings, the Mounties' would add four more runs scored on hits and errors and secure a 9-2 victoryÂ
Notes:
- The Golden Eagles had five total hits compared to the Mounties' 10
- Sierra Walter got the win, pitching seven innings and earning 10 strikeouts
