Softball Sweeps Rutgers-Newark on Sunday

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team swept Rutgers-Newark in a two-game series on Sunday afternoon.  

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Freshman Jackie Flannery led the Golden Eagles with two hits and two runs scored 
  • Senior Kate Kiernan totaled one hit and a team-high two RBIs
  • Junior Mariah Salvatto went 2-4 at the plate, with one run scored and one RBI
  • Sophomore Antonia Busa recorded two hits on four appearances at the plate to go along with one run scored 
  • Keelin O'Brien of the Scarlet Raiders finished with one hit, one run scored and one RBI

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles wasted no time getting the first run of the game scored when hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Flannery home to score to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the first
  • After the second inning remained scoreless for both sides, SJLI added to their lead in the top half of the third inning, collecting six hits and five runs scored, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles from Kiernan and Salvatto
  • In the bottom half of the third inning, Rutgers-Newark got on the scoreboard as they added four runs on three hits in the inning, as O'Brien tripled to right field, securing two runs to score as the SJLI lead was cut to just 6-4
  •  The Scarlet Raiders tallied another run scored in the bottom of the sixth inning off a single to left field as an error followed to allow one run to score, but St. Joseph's was able to hang on to take game one 6-5

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Salvatto secured a game-high three RBIs, with one hit and one run scored
  • Busa was 2-3 at the plate with one RBI
  • Flannery and Riley Lim-Ellis each had two hits, and one run scored
  • Kaylna Figol led Rutgers-Newark with one hit, one run scored, and two runs batted in

How it happened:

  • The Scarlet Raiders secured the first run scored of the game in the bottom of the second inning, as bases were loaded and a walk advanced the runner home to take a 1-0 lead
  • Rutgers-Newark added to their lead in the third inning when Figol homered over the center field wall and drove in one runner to score as they took a 3-0 advantage 
  • St. Joseph's remained scoreless until the fifth inning, as Emily Fenezia scored on a wild pitch, and on the very next at-bat, Busa singled to third to bring home Flannery to score
  • Later on in the same inning, Salvatto flew out to left field on a sacrifice fly, allowing Lim-Ellis to score, tying the game at three 
  • An error and a wild pitch on behalf of SJLI allowed Rutgers-Newark to score one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the tie and take a 4-3 lead
  • As the Golden Eagles trailed in the top of the seventh inning, a Salvatto home run over the left centerfield wall propelled the SJLI ahead as they secured the 5-4 victory late, capturing the sweep
