Softball Opens Conference Play With Losses to St. Joseph's Brooklyn

When and Where:

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team started Skyline Conference play, dropping back-to-back games to St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. 

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Freshman Jackie Flannery led the Golden Eagles with three hits, two runs batted in, and one run scored
  • Sophomore Antonia Busa tallied two hits on three appearances at the plate, adding one run scored and one RBI
  • Junior Mariah Slavatto recorded one hit and one RBI
  • Sofia Logreco secured one hit and two RBIs for the Bears
  • Lauren Van Der Kamp was 1-1 at the plate with two RBIs

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles got their first run of the game in the first inning as Busasingled through the left side, driving home Flannery to score
  • SJLI committed a couple of errors in the bottom half of the inning to allow the Bears to tie the game 
  • In the top of the second inning, Samantha Lugo and Julia Ruocchio were able to get on base, both securing a single before Flannery drove both runners home with a single to right field to take a 3-1 lead
  • The top of the fifth inning saw SJLI again secure another run scored when Salvatto singled up the middle to drive home Busa to add to the Golden Eagle lead
  • In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Bears totaled four runs scored on three hits and two errors, highlighted by a Van Der Kamp 2 RBI single up the middle to take back the lead 5-4
  • The Bears, again, would add another run as Logreco reached home on an error by SJLI to secure the 6-4 victory 

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Junior Mariah Salvatto led the Golden Eagles with two hits, two runs scored, and the RBIs
  • Freshman Alex Labarba totaled two hits, two RBIs, and one run scored 
  • Senior Kate Kiernan finished 2-2 at the plate to go along with two runs scored and one RBI
  • Payton Walker led the Bears, going 3-4, with five RBIs and two runs scored
  • St. Joseph's Brooklyn's Bella Gomez added one hit, three RBIs, and two runs scored
  • The Bear's Vivan Garcia secured three runs scored and two RBIs on one hit

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles opened the game in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits, highlighted by a Kiernan RBI triple and a Labarba RBI double 
  • St. Joseph's Brooklyn rallied in the bottom half of the inning, with Walker hitting a two-RBI double to right-center with the bases loaded to bring the score 3-2 in SJLI's favor
  • After batters were walked in the inning and passed balls allowed runners to score, an Autumn Poppett single to left field added another run to score as SJBK ended the inning with a 7-3 lead
  • As Samantha Lugo led off the second inning with a walk, a Flannery triple right field brought Lugo into score, which led to Flannery coming home on the next at-bat as the lead was cut to just two runs
  • The Bears again had a decisive inning in the fourth, with eight runs on six hits as Gomez and Walker both hit Two RBI doubles that helped guide SJBK to a 15-5 advantage 
  • SJLI found three more runs to score in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back triples from Salvatto and Labarba, each allowing one run to score as St. Joseph's Long Island tried to fight back but it was too late as the Bears secured the 16-8 victory
Next, the Golden Eagles travel to the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday, April 7, at 12:00 p.m. for a Skyline Conference matchup.
