Softball Splits with Mt. St. Vincent for First Conference Victory of Season

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team had a significant game on Sunday, splitting with the University of Mt. St. Vincent. 

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Freshman Jackie Flannery led the Golden Eagles with one hit and one RBI
  • Junior Madison Dipalo secured two hits, appearing at the plate three times
  • Nichole Reyes led the Dolphins, totaling two hits and one run scored
  • Mt. St. Vincent's Aaliyah Dejesus secured one hit and one RBI
  • Savannah Autobee pitched seven innings for the Dolphins, allowing seven hits and one earned run to earn the win

How it happened:

  • The Dolphins secured the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Reyes tripled, leading to stealing home to take a 1-0 advantage
  • SJLI tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with a Flannery RBI single driving home Emily Fenezia, who came in as a pinch runner
  • Dejesus drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with bases loaded, with an RBI single

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Junior Mariah Salvatto provided a game-high four RBIs, one hit and two runs scored
  • Senior Kate Kiernan recorded two hits on four appearances at the plate, to go along with two runs scored and one run batted in
  • Senior Julia Ruochhio went 2-3 at the plate, scoring one run and one RBI
  • Sophomore Antonia Busa provided one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored
  • Kaitlin Cirillo tallied three hits, one run, and one RBI
  • Mt. St. Vincent's Sarah Colon finished 3-4 and one run batted in

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead with Busa hitting an RBI single that drove home Flannery to score
  • Later in the inning, a single from Kiernan, followed by an error by the left fielder, allowed all runners to score to bring the lead to 5-0 at the end of the first inning
  • In the bottom of the first inning, UMSV responded with four hits and three runs scored, with Colon, Cirillo, and Dejesus all providing an RBI single
  • In the second inning, neither team recorded a run, as Ruocchio hit an RBI single to bring home Kiernan to score to take a 6-3 lead in the third inning
  • Salvatto added a grand slam for SJLI in the top of the fourth inning, as Flannery, Busa, and Riley Lim-Ellis all were brought home to score as St. Joseph's ended the inning up 10-3
  • Ruocchio led off the fifth inning with a triple, followed by an RBI single from Dipalo and another RBI single from Adrianna Ciancuielli as the Golden Eagles secured the 12-4 victory
