Softball Swept by John Jay on Wednesday

Results:

John Jay swept the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team on Wednesday evening.

Game One:

Key Players:

  • Junior Mariah Salvatto led the Golden Eagles with one hit, one run scored, and one run batted in
  • Sophomore Antonia Busa secured one hit, and one run scored
  • Jaliene Santiago of the Bloodhounds going 4-4 at the plate, with one run scored and one RBI
  • John Jay's Rylea Sandel provided two hits on four appearances at the plate, with two runs scored and three RBIs
  • Angelina Schoelles of John Jay added one hit, one run scored, and two RBIs

How it happened:

  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when John Jay's Sandel two RBI single to secure the first two runs of the game
  • SJLI was held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Busa was brought home on a bunt from Salvatto as the Bloodhounds committed three errors in the inning, allowing St. Joseph's to take a 3-2 lead
  • John Jay took back the lead in the fifth inning, compiling three runs scored on two hits, highlighted by a Santiago double to left center that drove in the first run of the inning
  • The Bloodhounds would secure their victory in the top of the seventh as the team rallied seven runs scored on five hits to secure a 12-3 victory in game one

Game two:

Key Players:

  • Freshman Jackie Flannery totaled two hits on four at-bats, with two runs scored and one RBI
  • Busa led the Golden Eagles with two RBIs on two hits
  • Sandel led the Bloodhounds, going 3-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and two RBIs
  • Elika Rodriguez contributed two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI for John Jay

How it happened:

  • The Bloodhounds wasted no time scoring four runs in the top half of the first inning, as Sydney Bankston doubled to left center to bring home one run to score, followed by a Sandel RBI single up the middle 
  • A Busa single to center field brought home Flannery to score in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to just three (4-1)
  • John Jay was able to add to their lead as a ground out with runners on base allowed one run to score, followed by a sacrifice flyout that drove in another run, taking a 7-1 advantage in the fourth inning
  • A Flannery groundout in the fifth inning brought in Dipalo to score to trim the John Jay lead to five
  • Sandel singled to right field in the top of the seventh to bring home Rodriguez to score in the seventh inning as the Bloodhounds secured an 8-2 victory and the sweep over St. Joseph's
