Men's Basketball Stopped by Yeshiva

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team dropped a Skyline Conference contest to Yeshiva, 91-81 on Saturday evening. 

Top performers:

  • Senior Alec Tabada led the Golden Eagles with 29 points, shooting 9-13 from the field with five rebounds, two assists and two blocks
  • Sophomore AJ Esposito secured a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with one assist
  • Senior Spencer Malloy added 10 points, five rebounds, five assists, and one steal
  • Ryan McNeely and Justin Forest scored 11 and 10 points, respectively 
  • Max Zakheim led Yeshiva with a game-high 34 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals
  • Zevi Samet totaled 22 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 10-point (16-6) lead through the first five minutes of action on a Tabada three on the pass from Malloy 
  • Yeshiva cut the lead down to just four points five minutes later before SJLI's McNeely and Esposito combined for nine straight points to bring the lead back up to 11 (28-17)
  • St. Joseph's would convert on a three-pointer in four of their next five possessions to hold on to their 10-point lead with 4:13 left in the half
  • Four quick points in the final minute of the half for the Maccabees cut the lead to six before an Esposito layup off the pass from Malloy closed the half with SJLI ahead by eight (45-37)
  • Tabada came out of the half pushing the pace as the forward scored seven of the Golden Eagles' first 13 points to keep SJLI ahead by double digits (58-46) with 15:42 remaining
  • St. Joseph's would convert from beyond the arc and the free-throw line over the five minutes of play to hold on to a double-digit advantage, as their largest lead would reach 15 points (65-50) with 12:00 minutes to go
  • Yeshiva would outscore St. Joseph's 22-6 over five minutes of play to take their first lead of the night, 72-71, with 6:46 on the clock
  • The Maccabees held on to their lead for the remainder of the game, out-shooting SJLI 19-10 across the final minutes of play to secure the victory 

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) shot 52.8% from the field and 50.0% from three-point range
  • Yeshiva was 47.9% from the field and 25.0% from beyond the arc
  • SJLI held a 40-35 rebounding advantage
  • The Golden Eagles finished with 34 points in the paint and 27 bench points
