Baseball Sweeps SUNY Cobleskill, 5-4, 21-5; Kelly Records 100th Career Strikeout

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins against SUNY Cobleskill at Gregg Alfano Field in Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles edged out the Fighting Tigers 5-4 in game one before a 21-5 win in game two. 

Game one: SJLI 5; SUNY Cobleskill 4

Key Players:

  • Joe Thatcher was 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run

  • Junior Anselmo Joya recorded the Golden Eagles' only other hit of the game

  • Senior Dante Morabito was credited with the win out of the pen, allowing one hit with two strikeouts in the seventh

How it happened:

  • SUNY Cobleskill scored two runs in the first inning, as Sarda hit an RBI double and he stole home a few batters later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead

  • Cole Platt drove in a run in the third inning with a ground out to increase the Fighting Tigers' lead to 3-0

  • St. Joseph's scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, with senior Mike DiFilippo scoring on a wild pitch for the Golden Eagles' first run

  • Junior Dom Crema drove in sophomore Rob Page with a ground ball to second base to trim the deficit to 3-2

  • Thatcher crushed a home run to left field for a two-run blast to put the Golden Eagles ahead 4-3

  • The visitors tied the game at four in the sixth on a run-scoring single to right field for David Flora with two outs

  • DiFilippo walked it off in the bottom of the seventh, reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed James Maggio to score the winning run

Game two: SJLI 21; SUNY Cobleskill 5

Key Players:

  • Maggio went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored

  • Joya was 2-for-3 with two runs scored

  • Marco Gullo and Alex Johnston both had a hit and two runs scored

  • SJLI starter Jack Kelly recorded his 100th career strikeout and was credited for the win after he allowed just one run on four hits with Ks in four innings

How it happened:

  • In game two, the Golden Eagles were early to score with a run in the bottom of the first. Dom Crema was hit by a pitch and quickly advanced on a wild pitch. Thatcher sent a single through the 5-6 hole and stole second, putting runners on second and third with one out. Lynch came up and pulled a ball to the right side with Crema beating the throw home for a 1-0 advantage

  • St. Joseph's batted around in the bottom of the third putting up six runs. Maggio knocked in two runs with a double in the right center, and a couple of batters later, Johnston had an RBI single to left

  • Cobleskill pushed a run across in the top of the fourth when Flora walked to lead off the inning and then came in to score on a wild pitch, 7-1

  • The Golden Eagles added five runs in the fifth, extending the lead to 12-1

  • A sac fly and a wild pitch plated a couple of runs for the Tigers in the top of the sixth, 12-3

  • SJLI added a run in the bottom half of the sixth, and after a scoreless seventh, a two-RBI triple in the top of the eighth from Cobleskill's Korin Laurilla moved the score to 13-5

  • The Golden Eagles added eight runs in the bottom half of the eighth on five hits, bringing the game to its final score of 21-5

Next up, the Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field and host Ramapo College for a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 5th at 3:00 pm.
