Softball Sweeps Baruch on Tuesday

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team completes the sweep over Baruch on Tuesday evening. 

Game One: SJLI 4, Baruch 3

Key Players:

How it happened:

  • The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits
  • Flannery led off the bottom half of the inning with a bunt, which set up a Busa RBI single to center field to cut the lead in half (2-1)
  • Neither team would score until the fourth inning, when St. Joseph's Flannery bunted in Samantha Lugo to score to tie the game
  • SJLI took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs scored on three hits, as Flannery singled to right field to bring home Megan Olson, followed by an error that allowed another run to score
  • Baruch got another run to score in the top of the seventh, but St. Joseph's was able to limit it to just one run and secure the game one victory

Game two: SJLI 10, Baruch 7

Key Players:

  • Senior Emily Fenezia led the Golden Eagles, going 4-4 at the plate to go along with one run scored and four RBIs
  • Flannery totaled two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs
  • Lugo contributed two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI
  • Sophomore Alexandria LaBarba posted two hits and one run scored

How it happened:

  • The Golden Eagles drove in the first run of the game in the first inning when Julia Ruocchio singled to right field to bring home Fenezia, as SJLI took an early one-run lead
  • SJLI added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning as a Flannery RBI single up the middle, setting up Fenezia for a two-RBI single to center field that saw Flannery and Amber Danz score
  • Baruch found the scoreboard in the fourth, securing three runs on three hits in the inning to cut the SJLI lead to just one (4-3)
  • The Bearcats took their first lead of the game in the fifth, capturing two runs on just two hits to take a one-run advantage
  • St. Joseph's responded in the bottom half of the same inning, finishing the inning with four runs on just three hits as Lugo and Flannery both secured RBI singles, with Fenezia securing a two-RBI single 
  • Mariah Salvatto added to the lead in the sixth on an RBI single up the middle that brought home Sarah Murphy, followed by an Ava Inserra RBI sacrifice fly that brought home LaBarba 
  • Baruch responded in the top of the seventh inning, collecting two runs on four hits, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles completed the sweep with a game two victory
