Softball Splits with Mt. St. Vincent

When and Where:

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team splits conference matchup with the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening.

Game One: SJLI 11, UMSV 3

Key Players:

  • Freshman Angelina DeLuca led the Golden Eagles with two hits and two runs scored
  • Senior Julia Ruocchio recorded one hit, three RBI's, and one run scored
  • Sophomore Alexandria LaBarba finished with one hit, two runs scored, and two RBIs
  • Junior Brooke Bove collected one hit, one run scored, and three RBIs
  • Junior Caitlyn Herzing pitched all five innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs

How it happened:

  • After the Golden Eagles allowed just one run in the top of the first, SJLI responded, putting up six runs on five hits, highlighted by a Bove triple to right center that saw three runs come home to score
  • St. Joseph's kept their momentum in the bottom half of the second inning, totaling five runs on just three hits, again highlighted by a three-RBI triple, this time on behalf of Ruocchio
  • Neither team would bring home any runs until the top of the fourth inning, when the Dolphins collected two runs scored on a walk with the bases loaded and a fielder's choice allowed another run to score to make it an eight-run game (11-3)
  • Neither team would score in the final inning as SJLI walked away with a game one victory

Game two: SJLI 2, UMSV 4

Key Players:

  • Junior Antonia Busa finished leading the Golden Eagles with two hits and one run batted in
  • Junior Brooke BOve was 2-3 at the plate with one run scored
  • Sophomores Samantha Lugo and Jacqueline Flannery each collected one hit 

How it happened:

  • After four straight scoreless innings, it was the Dolphins who were able to find the scoreboard first as a walk and two hit by pitches loaded the bases, leading to an error that allowed one run to score 
  • UMSV added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning when a double to center field brought one run in to score, followed by a single to center field to bring another runner home to make it a 3-0 Dolphins lead
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, two fielders' choices allowed two runners to score in the inning, as St. Joseph's finished the inning with two runs scored on two hits
  • Mount Saint Vincent added to their lead in the top of the sixth, as a single to left field brought home the only run scored in the inning
  • The Dolphins kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard ofr the rest of the game as they captured the game two victory
