Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) baseball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader with Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles took the opener 6-3 before pulling away for an 11-6 victory in the nightcap.

How it happened - Game One:

  • Both teams remained scoreless through the first four innings.
  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Asaro's double, a walk to Kurre, Hackal's RBI single and stolen base, Johnston's sacrifice fly, and Thatcher's RBI double.
  • The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the seventh on Thatcher's RBI single and an unearned run aided by an Old Westbury error.
  • Old Westbury scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on errors and a bases-loaded walk, but could not complete the comeback.
  • Paul McNally (W, 3-2) earned the victory, throwing 6.1 strong innings with three strikeouts. Ryan Barlow recorded the final two outs with two strikeouts.

  • Joe Thatcher went 3-for-5 with a run scored
  • Ryan Kurre finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a stolen base, a sacrifice fly, and a sacrifice hit

  • Joe Hackal added 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and two stolen bases

How it happened - Game Two:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored single runs in the first and second innings on a wild pitch and Kurre's sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Old Westbury tied it in the second and took a brief lead with three runs in the fifth on a two-RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Golden Eagles responded with two runs in the fifth to regain the lead, then erupted for three unearned runs in the sixth thanks to the Panthers errors and a wild pitch.
  • SJLI added two more unearned runs in the seventh, one in the eighth on McNally's RBI single, and one final unearned run in the ninth.

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's (L.I.) recorded 20 hits across both games (9 in Game One, 11 in Game Two) while taking advantage of 6 Old Westbury errors in Game Two.
  • SJLI improved to 14-12 overall with the doubleheader sweep.
