Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to New Paltz, 15-9

Results:

On Monday evening, the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to New Paltz, 15-9. 

Top performers:
  • Senior Amanda Gennardo totaled three goals, three ground balls and one caused turnover

  • Senior Jamie Trowbridge collected a game-high four ground balls while adding two goals, causing one turnover, and adding a team-high four draw controls   

  • Freshman Gianna D'Arienzo scored one goal and tallied one assist and one groundball 

  • Freshman Maggie Harding contributed 10 saves 

  • Kaitlyn Shaw provided the Hawks with seven goals, with six draw controls and one caused turnover

  • Lexi Atwater recorded three goals, one ground ball, and one draw control

How it happened:
  • The first quarter saw a close battle between the two teams, as the Hawks scored first but the Golden Eagles would respond scoring three unanswered goals 

  • A goal late in the first from Melissa Newman would put St. Joseph's up 4-2 before New Paltz answered 40 seconds later with a goal of their own, giving SJLI the lead 4-3 at the end of the first

  • The Hawks would go on to take a commanding lead in the second quarter as they scored nine straight goals and entered the half with a 12-4 lead

  • Senior Emma Lange put the Golden Eagles back in the scoring column to open up the third quarter, as they outscored New Paltz 3-1 in the quarter 

  • Trowbridge and Gennardo would score in the final quarter cutting the lead to 13-9 late in the fourth but two goals from Shaw would solidify the victory for the Hawks  

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's collected 17 ground balls compared to New Paltz collecting 19

  • The Golden Eagles went 18-25 on clears while the Hawks went 14-16

  • New Paltz recorded 17 draw controls and SJLI recorded 11 

  • The Hawks totaled 35 shots as St. Joseph's tallied 17 shots for the game
