Men's Lacrosse Opens Skyline Conference Play with Loss to Maritime

When and Where:

April 5, 2024  - Patchogue, NY

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's lacrosse team opened Skyline Conference play with a loss to Maritime on Friday evening.

Top performers:

  • Senior Connor Owenburg led the Golden Eagles with two goals scored, collecting two ground balls and causing two turnovers
  • Freshman Nick Morales added one assist and two ground balls 
  • Freshman goalkeeper Michael Gilardi made his collegiate debut, recording nine saves
  • Parker Reily led the Privateers with nine goals and four assists, to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Maritimes Charles Garace tallied four goals, one assist, five ground balls, and one caused turnover
  • Connor Tomich and Ryan Brice each totaled three goals and combined for five assists 

How it happened:

  • The Privateers took a commanding lead early by scoring 10 unanswered goals in the opening quarter 
  • Maritime provided another strong scoring output in the second quarter, adding eight goals in the quarter to enter halftime with an 18-0 advantage 
  • As the second half got underway and the Privateers netted two more goals, SJLI's Owenburg snapped the scoring run by putting away St. Joseph's first goal five minutes into the second half 
  • Owneburg again would find the back of the net for the Golden Eagles off the pass from Morales as the third quarter came to an end with the Privateers ahead 21-2 
  • The fourth quarter saw no more goals scored as Maritime secured the victory

Notes:

  • Maritime held a 64-28 shot advantage 
  • SJLI's goalkeepers combined for 15 saves
  • The Privateers collected 45 ground balls to the Golden Eagles' 25
Next, the Golden Eagles will travel to Purchase for a Skyline Conference matchup on Tuesday, April 9, at 4:30 pm.
