Men's Basketball Bounces Back With 76-71 win over USMMA

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team picked up a 76-71 win over U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for their 10th conference victory of the season on Wednesday evening.

Top performers:

  • Graduate Student Matt Coletti led the Golden Eagles with a 22-point performance on 7-for-9 shooting from three-point range
  • Senior Alec Tabada scored 14 points with four assists, two steals, and two blocks
  • Sophomore AJ Esposito contributed 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field with five rebounds and a block
  • Senior Spencer Malloy grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and also led all players with five assists
  • Junior Justin Turner added seven points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks
  • Isaac Vencel led USMMA with 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 5-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc and tied the game-high with three steals
  • Clark Castleberry contributed 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting overall, while adding a pair of steals and a block
  • Drew Zalescik added 17 points and led the team with seven rebounds, while tying the game-high with three steals

How it happened:

  • St. Joseph's jumped out in front to take an 11-4 lead in the first four minutes of play, with Coletti making three, three-point baskets
  • The Mariners scored seven straight points to tie the game at 11 on a layup for Mason Lavergne at the 13:59 mark
  • Back-to-back threes for Graduate Student Justin Forest and Coletti put SJLI ahead 17-11, moments before the Golden Eagles went on a 12-2 run to take a 13-point lead (29-16) with 6:10 on the clock. Esposito scored eight points during the run
  • USMMA responded with an 8-0 run to come within five (29-24) on a Castleberry layup with 3:53 on the clock
  • Junior Matthew Maxwell made a three on the next possession to end the visitors' run, then Vencel responded with a three of his own right away to cut the deficit to five (32-27)
  • Castleberry and Coletti each exchanged threes with under a minute remaining in the half, as the hosts went into the break with a 37-31 advantage
  • Castleberry made a three 19 seconds into the half to cut the lead to three (37-34), then Tabada scored nine consecutive points for the Golden Eagles, with his final basket putting the hosts up by 10 (48-38) at the 13:39 mark
  • Coletti hit a three, then Forest made a dunk to increase the lead to 15 (53-38) for the hosts' largest lead of the night with 12:33 on the clock
  • Zalescik scored the next six points for USMMA, then St. Joseph's took back a 15-point lead (59-44) on a three for Tabada and a three-point play for Esposito with about 10 minutes remaining
  • A few minutes later, Lavergne connected with a three for the visitors, then after a timeout, Turner made a three for SJLI to match their largest lead of 15 (64-49) with 6:03 on the clock
  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy trimmed their deficit to 10 twice in the next two minutes, making it a 66-56 game on a jumper for Castleberry with 3:54 on the clock
  • Coletti responded with his seventh three-point basket of the night to increase the lead to 13 (69-56) at the 3:28 mark
  • The Golden Eagles led by 11 (74-63) with 33 seconds remaining, then USMMA crept closer in the game's final seconds on a pair of three-point baskets for Vencel, but it wasn't enough as St. Joseph's claimed a 76-71 victory in their final home game of the regular season

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's shot 53.8% from the field and 61.1% from three-point territory
  • The Mariners posted a 41.9% shooting percentage overall and 34.4% from beyond the arc
  • Each team grabbed 33 rebounds
  • The Golden Eagles held the advantage in assists (23-11), blocks (6-1), and points in the paint (30-24)
  • SJLI's bench scored 22 points, while USMMA's bench scored one
