Men's Lacrosse Falters to Maritime

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's lacrosse team drops its fourth conference loss to Maritime on Tuesday.

Top performers:

  • Sophomore Caden Stubba led the Golden Eagles with four goals and two ground balls
  • Senior Connor Owenburg finished with one goal, one assist, five ground balls, and three caused turnovers
  • Senior Johnny Argueta added one goal, one assist, three ground balls, and one caused turnover
  • Rohan Brown and Najee Henderson totaled one goal and one assist, respectively 

How it happened:

  • The Privateers took an early lead, scoring the first four goals of the game, before Anthony Herrera ended the scoring run for the Golden Eagles off a pass from Brown
  • Maritime would close out the first quarter scoring six goals, holding SJLI to nothing down the stretch as the second quarter started with Maritime ahead 10-1
  • The Privateers would score 13 straight in the second quarter, building on their scoring run from the first quarter as they held a 23-1 lead with 2:14 left in the first half; Stubba would find the back of the net for SJLI off the pass from Argueta with just five seconds to go in the first half
  • St. Joseph's would open the scoring in the second half as Owenburg caused the turnover and gave the outlet pass to Argueta, who beat the keeper on the shot to secure their third goal of the game 
  • Maritime would answer with three goals of their own in the quarter before Stubba netted another goal, unassisted, with 37 seconds left to play in the third quarter
  • Both teams would trade goals at the start of the final quarter, with Brown and Owenburg securing goals before Stubba scored back-to-back goals to make the score 28-8 with 6:17 left to play
  • The Golden Eagles would score the final goal of the game as SJLI would force a Privateers turnover, setting up Henderson scoring his first goal of the game with 1:25 left, as Maritime secured the 28-9 win

Notes:

  • St. Joseph's collected 24 ground balls to Maritime's 60
  • SJLI won six faceoffs
  • The Golden Eagles were 16-20 on clears
